The Five Pillars
of the Early Church

초대교회의 다섯기둥
"They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." — Acts 2:42 (NASB 1995)
Before We Begin

Last time, we shared in grace through a warning message about "gaps." The devil never misses those gaps. This month, we must consider: how can we prevent gaps from forming in the church? That is why, among the many churches in Scripture, we want to share in grace together by learning from the way God approved of the early church's method of operation — and how the church stood in stability and revival when these five pillars upheld it.

So what are these five areas of church ministry?

Acts 2:14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words."

The secret of the early church's remarkable growth was not in its organization or buildings, but in the church's essential ministries. The very first of these was the ministry of gospel proclamation.

It means "________ proclaiming the king's command." In other words, it is the proclamation of the gospel that declares Jesus Christ as King.

Acts 5:42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

The church's first mission is the ministry of proclaiming and spreading the message that Jesus is the Christ. It is not about shouting inward, but about the ministry of proclaiming the gospel outward.

The early church was one that boldly proclaimed Jesus' _______, ___________, and salvation.

=> The first purpose of the church's existence is gospel proclamation. When our church and cell groups become communities that share the gospel, the church comes alive.
Matthew 28:20 "teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Following this command of Jesus, it is not mere information transfer but _______ education that transforms lives. The early church did not simply evangelize — they continuously taught the Word.

Acts 2:42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching...

Therefore, the believers did not remain mere converts but grew as disciples. Jesus also commanded us to raise up disciples. That is how the church became a community of disciples.

=> The church is a school that produces _________.
Acts 2:44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;
Acts 2:45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.
Acts 2:46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,

At that time, the early church was convinced that Jesus would return very soon, so they felt nothing was too precious to give up materially. Those who had much gave generously, and those who had little shared according to need — they shared all of life together. That is why, no matter whose home they visited, they could break bread together with gladness and sincerity of heart.

  • __________ together
  • ______ together
  • _________ helped and ________

The believers of the early church were not merely a gathering — they were a community that shared life together.

=> The church is a spiritual family community.
Acts 6:1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
Acts 6:2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables."
Acts 6:3 "Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task."
Acts 6:4 "But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

At that time, there were disputes and complaints between the Hellenistic Jews and the native Hebrews over the church's service and ministry. When this happened, the twelve apostles gathered for a meeting.

They decided to select seven men full of __________ and ________ and entrust this work to them — and who were these people? They are the famous seven deacons. Let us read together:

Acts 6:5 The statement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.

These seven ordained deacons took charge of ___________ work — caring for the poor, the widows, and those in need, serving both in church matters and in household matters — while the apostles were able to focus on teaching _________ and offering ________. As a result, the church grew in a stable manner.

=> The church is a community of service that stands firm and grows when each person does their __________ work in proper order.
Acts 2:46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,
Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

The fundamental reason they gathered and lived in community was ________.

The church gathers because of worship — when ____________ becomes the main purpose, it ultimately becomes a gathering unrelated to God.

The early church:

  • Gathered at the temple to ________
  • Broke _______ at home
  • ________ and ________
=> The ________ of the church is worship offered to God. When the church is filled to the brim with grace through the Word, prayer, praise, and sharing, it receives favor from all the people, and God added to their number __________ those who were being saved.

Conclusion
The early church was built upon five pillars.
1
Kerygma
A church that proclaims __________
2
Didache
A church that teaches _________
3
Koinonia
A church that fellowships in ______
4
Diakonia
A church that ________ one another
5
Leitourgia
A church that _________ God

When these five ministries were in balance, the church grew in a healthy way. Without anything flashy or spectacular, the church grows when it is faithful to the basics and devoted to its calling. We believe that Gerizim Hope Presbyterian Church will also become a precious church where these five pillars are established and God is always with us.
